Relay For Life Fundraising Ideas

I am participating in my local Relay For Life event on June 2nd in an effort to raise money to fund a cure and help families get the care they need. It's my first time doing this 24 hour event (yes, I said 24 hours) and I'm super excited!

I have mentioned on my blog once before that my Mother in Law passed away last Christmas Eve (2011) from cancer. Should would have been 50 this April. She was too young to be taken away from us. I know she is with our Lord watching over us and is always with us but I still struggle to accept that she's gone. I'm so glad I had and enjoyed my time with her while she was with us. But nothing pains me more than to see the love of my life and my sisters-in-law struggle with their loss. I wish I could take their pain away everyday. So in an effort to ease some pain and get one step closer to acceptance we are doing the walk and fundraising in hopes that we can assist in finding a cure for this effed up disease! I truly hope our efforts are really going to good use.

Anyway... moving on! It's been quite the experience trying to fundraise for this event. I try to do my due diligence and support these non-profits and other events that friends and family particpate in but its so hard to get people to want to help unless they have really been effected by cancer in someway. I understand times are tough for sooo many people but it has been very discouraging at times. I am so grateful for the personal donations I have received though and I wanted to share what we did to fundraise this month in case anyone is looking for ideas.

1. We had a yard sale and raised $550.00!!!

Everyone asked people to clean out their closets for donations and surprisingly a few people actually cleaned out their closets. We had tons of clothing that we sold each piece for a dollar. We priced everything to sell so we wouldn't have much left at the end. Its a little different when items are donated and you're selling to fundraise. It's easier to want to bargain because even if you can only sell it for $3 its still $3 you didn't have before and $3 more for the cause. I definitely recommend the yard sale route. Especially because if people can't afford to make a personalc cash donation, they can help a lot by just digging through their junk and donating those items without cringing.

2. Bunco De Mayo.. errr... CLR fundraiser

It was supposed to be a bunco fundraiser but didn't turn out that way. The object was to have a bunco fundraiser and have the buy-in be $20 per person. Half of the money would go to the fundraiser and the other half would go to the bunco prizes (usually cash prizes). Well you need at least 12 people to play bunco otherwise you have to ghost and that's not SUPER fun. Well we ended up having 9 lovely ladies take time out of their Cinco De Mayo day to join us... but 9 was not enough to play a good game of bunco. I did freak out and get very discouraged but I know people got shit to do! Oh well. So thanks to my Mommy she quickly turned my mood around and suggested that we play CLR instead! CLR is a dice game that you can play in any large or small group. Very fun and easy to play! Well we still did $20 and $10 went to the fundraiser and the other $10 the ladies used to play the game. I made sure to take lots of pictures this time! Photo journalism novice! Here is the recap and lots of pictures.
